The community traces its name to the early 1800s, when Colonel Samuel Phoenix spotted elk antlers caught in a tree and called the area “Elk Horn.” As the community grew, Elkhorn was named the Walworth County seat in 1846. Today, its historic downtown, tree-lined streets and community traditions continue to give the city the welcoming hometown feel it is known for.
Good to know: Elkhorn is known as the “Christmas Card Town,” a nickname inspired by its holiday displays and Christmas card artwork depicting local landmarks. It has also been home to the Walworth County Fair since 1851.
